Washington Standard Deduction

Washington Standard Deduction

Washington State does not impose a general individual income tax, so there is no statewide standard deduction for general income.

However, Washington does levy a capital gains tax on certain long-term capital assets, such as stocks, bonds, and other investments, which includes a specific standard deduction.

Washington Capital Gains Tax Standard Deduction

The Washington capital gains tax applies a 7% rate on the sale or exchange of qualifying long-term capital assets, only on gains exceeding the standard deduction amount.

This deduction is adjusted annually for inflation and is the same for all taxpayers, including individuals, married couples filing jointly, and domestic partners.

  • Tax Year 2025 (filed in 2026): $278,000
  • Tax Year 2024 (filed in 2025): $270,000

This means that gains up to the deduction threshold are not subject to the state capital gains tax, providing significant relief for eligible taxpayers.

Federal Standard Deduction for Washington Residents

Even though Washington does not have a general income tax, residents still file U.S. federal income taxes and can claim the federal standard deduction. For Tax Year 2025 (filed in 2026), the federal standard deduction amounts are:

  • Single filers & Married filing separately: $15,750
  • Married filing jointly & Qualifying surviving spouses: $31,500
  • Head of household: $23,625

Additionally, taxpayers who are age 65 or older or blind are eligible for an extra standard deduction at the federal level, which increases their deduction and can reduce taxable income further.

Electronic Filing Recommendation

Electronic filing (e-filing) is recommended for both federal and Washington capital gains tax returns. Benefits include:

  • Faster processing and quicker refunds for any federal or state tax credits.
  • Automatic calculations of deductions and credits, reducing errors.
  • Immediate confirmation of submission and record-keeping convenience.
  • Many e-filing platforms also handle Washington’s capital gains tax reporting, ensuring compliance and accurate calculations.

By filing electronically, Washington residents can efficiently manage both their state-specific capital gains tax and federal tax obligations, while minimizing the risk of errors or missed deductions.
