Oregon State Tax Deductions

Oregon State Tax Deductions

Oregon personal income tax filers may choose between claiming the Oregon standard deduction or Oregon itemized deductions.

Taxpayers are allowed to select whichever option results in the larger deduction, and that choice may differ from the one used on their federal tax return.

This flexibility makes it especially important to compare both methods when preparing an Oregon return.

Oregon Standard Deduction

The Oregon standard deduction is separate from the federal standard deduction and is generally lower. The standard deduction amounts are:

  • Single or Married Filing Separately: $2,835
  • Married Filing Jointly or Qualifying Surviving Spouse: $5,670
  • Head of Household: $4,560
  • Seniors over 65 or blind: $1,200 on a single return and $1,000 per eligible person on a joint return.

The additional amounts for seniors and the blind can make it more advantageous to claim the standard deduction rather than itemizing.

Oregon Itemized Deductions

Oregon itemized deductions generally follow federal itemized deduction rules, but with several important differences and limitations. If you choose to itemize, you may be able to deduct the following qualifying expenses:

Common Oregon Itemized Deductions

Medical and Dental Expenses:

Taxes Paid:

  • Includes real and personal property taxes.
  • The combined deduction for state and local income and property taxes is capped at $10,000 ($5,000 if married filing separately).
  • Oregon state income taxes paid are not deductible on the Oregon return.

Home Mortgage Interest:

  • Interest paid on qualifying home loans, subject to federal limitations.

Charitable Contributions:

  • Gifts made to qualified charitable organizations.

Federal Income Taxes Withheld:

  • Oregon allows a deduction for federal income taxes withheld, but this deduction is subject to income-based phase-outs, meaning higher-income taxpayers may see this deduction reduced or eliminated.

Because of these unique rules, Oregon itemized deductions may not match federal itemized deductions dollar-for-dollar.

Other Oregon-Specific Deductions and Subtractions

In addition to standard or itemized deductions, Oregon allows certain subtractions from federal taxable income, which can further reduce state tax liability.

Common Oregon Subtractions

  • Retirement and Pension Income
A partial subtraction may be available for qualifying retirement or pension income for individuals age 62 or older, subject to income limits.
  • Social Security Benefits
Oregon does not tax Social Security income, and these benefits are subtracted from taxable income on the state return.
  • U.S. Government Interest and Dividends
Interest from U.S. Treasury bonds and other federal obligations is exempt from Oregon income tax.
  • Oregon College Savings and ABLE Contributions
Contributions to an Oregon College Savings Plan or Oregon ABLE account may qualify for a state tax subtraction.
  • Special Medical Subtraction for Seniors
Oregon offers an additional medical expense subtraction for qualifying elderly taxpayers who meet specific income and expense thresholds.

Why Electronic Filing Is Recommended

Because Oregon’s tax system includes separate deduction rules, income-based phase-outs, and multiple state-specific subtractions, electronic filing (e-filing) is highly recommended.

E-filing:

  • Automatically calculates whether the standard or itemized deduction is more beneficial
  • Correctly applies age- and blindness-related deductions
  • Accurately handles Oregon-only subtractions such as Social Security and retirement income
  • Reduces math and data-entry errors
  • Speeds up processing and refunds

Using IRS- and Oregon-approved tax software or a professional e-file provider helps ensure you receive every state tax deduction and subtraction you’re entitled to under Oregon law.
