Indiana 529 Tax Deduction

Indiana 529 Tax Deduction

Indiana offers one of the most generous state-level incentives for college savings through the Indiana 529 CollegeChoice Plan (Indiana529).

Rather than a deduction, Indiana provides a state income tax credit, which directly reduces the amount of Indiana tax you owe—dollar for dollar.

Credit Amount and Limits

Credit Value: Indiana taxpayers may claim a credit equal to 20% of their total contributions to an Indiana529 account made during the tax year.

Maximum Annual Credit:

  • $1,500 per year for most filers
  • $750 per year for married individuals filing separately

To receive the full $1,500 credit, you must contribute $7,500 during the year (since 20% of $7,500 equals $1,500).

Eligible Contributions and Plans

  • Qualified Plan Only: Contributions must be made to the Indiana CollegeChoice 529 Investment Plan (Indiana529) to qualify for the credit.
  • Contributions to 529 plans sponsored by other states do not qualify, even if the beneficiary is an Indiana resident.

Who Can Claim the Credit

The credit is available to any Indiana taxpayer, including:

  • Indiana residents and nonresidents
  • Parents, grandparents, relatives, or even friends

The person who makes the contribution is the one who claims the credit, regardless of the beneficiary’s relationship to the contributor.

Important Credit Rules

  • Non-Refundable:
The Indiana 529 credit can reduce your Indiana tax liability to zero, but it will not generate a refund.
  • No Carryforward or Carryback:
Any unused credit is lost if it cannot be applied in the current tax year.
  • Contribution Deadline:
Contributions made up to the Indiana tax filing deadline (generally April 15) may be elected to count for the prior tax year, allowing last-minute planning opportunities.
  • Recapture Provisions:

Indiana may reclaim (“recapture”) previously claimed credits if:

  • Funds are withdrawn for non-qualified expenses
  • Funds are rolled over to another state’s 529 plan
  • Funds are used for out-of-state K–12 tuition
  • Funds are used for student loan repayments

Federal Tax Benefits of Indiana529

In addition to the Indiana tax credit, Indiana529 plans offer the same federal tax advantages available to all qualified 529 plans:

Tax-deferred growth: Investment earnings are not taxed while funds remain in the account.

Tax-free withdrawals: Withdrawals are free from federal and Indiana income tax when used for qualified education expenses, including:

  • College and university tuition and fees
  • Books, supplies, and required equipment
  • Certain room and board expenses
  • K–12 tuition expenses (up to $10,000 per year, federal limit)

Recommended: File Electronically

Indiana encourages taxpayers to file electronically, which offers several advantages:

  • Faster processing and quicker refunds
  • Automatic calculation of credits, reducing errors
  • Immediate confirmation of receipt
  • Direct integration of Indiana529 credit calculations

You can claim the Indiana 529 credit when filing your Indiana individual income tax return (Form IT-40) using approved tax software or a professional tax preparer. Electronic filing ensures the credit is applied accurately and efficiently.
