Overview of the 2025 Form W-2 (Wage and Tax Statement)
The 2025 Form W-2, officially called the Wage and Tax Statement, is a required IRS document that reports how much an employee earned during the 2025 calendar year and how much tax was withheld from their paychecks.
Employers must provide a W-2 to every employee and also submit copies to both the Social Security Administration (SSA) and the Internal Revenue Service (IRS).
This form plays a critical role in ensuring that wages, Social Security contributions, and tax withholdings are accurately recorded for retirement benefits and tax compliance.
Why the W-2 Is Important
Employees rely on the W-2 to prepare their federal and state income tax returns, usually using Form 1040 or Form 1040-SR.
The IRS and SSA use the information on the W-2 to verify that the income reported on a tax return matches what the employer reported. Any mismatch can delay refunds or trigger IRS notices.

Why Electronic Filing Is Strongly Recommended
Electronic filing is the safest and most efficient way to file your tax return using W-2 information.
E-filing:
- Imports W-2 data accurately
- Reduces math and transcription errors
- Flags missing or inconsistent information
- Speeds up refunds, especially with direct deposit
- Confirms receipt by the IRS
Most tax software and professional preparers support secure W-2 uploads, making electronic filing the preferred method for both accuracy and peace of mind.
