2025 New Bonus Standard Deduction for Seniors Over 65

2025 New Bonus Standard Deduction for Seniors Over 65

For the 2025 tax year, individuals age 65 or older may be eligible for a new, temporary $6,000 “senior bonus” deduction in addition to the existing extra standard deduction for seniors.

The bonus is subject to income limitations and is available whether you itemize or take the standard deduction.

New Senior Bonus Deduction (2025-2028)

This deduction was introduced by the One Big Beautiful Bill Act (OBBBA) and is in effect from tax years 2025 through 2028.

  • Amount: Up to $6,000 per eligible individual ($12,000 for a married couple if both spouses qualify).
  • Eligibility: Must be age 65 or older by December 31, 2025, and have a valid Social Security Number. Married couples must file jointly to claim the bonus.
  • Availability: Can be claimed in addition to your standard deduction or itemized deductions.
  • Income Phaseout: The deduction is reduced if your Modified Adjusted Gross Income (MAGI) exceeds certain thresholds.
  • Single filers/Heads of Household: Phaseout begins above $75,000 MAGI and is completely eliminated at $175,000.
  • Married Filing Jointly: Phaseout begins above $150,000 MAGI and is completely eliminated at $250,000.

Existing Additional Standard Deduction

This long-standing provision in the tax code is separate from the new bonus deduction and applies only if you take the standard deduction (not if you itemize).

Electronic Filing Recommendation

Filing electronically is strongly recommended:

  • Accuracy: Tax software automatically calculates the correct deduction, including phaseouts

  • Speed: E-filing speeds up IRS processing and potential refunds

  • Error Reduction: Software prevents claiming amounts exceeding the allowed limits

  • Documentation: Keep proof of age (e.g., birth certificate or driver’s license) in case of IRS verification

Most tax software for 2025 will automatically include the senior bonus deduction when you enter your birthdate and filing status, making electronic filing the fastest and easiest way to ensure you claim the full benefit.
