H&R Block 2016 Offers Free Deluxe Version Tax Filing Software

The world’s largest provider of tax services for consumers H&R Block, is offering their Deluxe + State software for FREE to those who already bought the 2014 version of Turbo Tax Basic or Deluxe software.

The deal is available in the wake of a modification of forms open to TurboTax Basic and Deluxe customers. TurboTax customers have realized that the tax software they have been using for years will not fully function without paying for additional upgrades.

The biggest change being that TurboTax will not support Schedule A forms in their Basic product. If you use TurboTax for itemizing deductions for charitable donations, Health Savings Account or mortgage interest, it will now cost $40 to upgrade to Turbo Tax Deluxe file for these deductions.

The Schedule A forms is accessible, by the 30% of DIY filers, using H&R Block Basic software, a $19.95 value. H&R Block have struck a deal with over 40 retailers, where Basic users of their software can get an additional 5% bonus on their federal refund if they taxpayer puts a portion or all of their tax refund on e-gift cards from those retailers.

If customers are not happy with their tax software selection this year, they can switch to H&R Block free of charge. TurboTax users can easily import their w2 form and last year’s data into H&R Block’s tax software and get all the related support and features.

Tax Filers Can Easily Make the Switch To H&R Block

In order to get your free Deluxe + State software by H&R Block, send an email including your name, address, phone number to SwitchToBlock@hrblock.com. You will also need to include your computer’s operating system (Windows/Mac), a photo or scan of the Turbo Tax receipt or an email showing the download code.

The taxpayer will then get an email with the H&R Block Deluxe + State download information. You can import last year’s TurboTax info directly into H&R Block’s software.

Turbo Tax Deluxe Clients Also Impacted

If you are a small business owner or self-employed, the Schedule C form that you would need to file is no longer available with TurboTax Deluxe edition. You can switch to make the switch for free to H&R Block’s Deluxe + State software. Schedule D forms that cover investment income, stocks, bonds, ESPPs are included in H&R Block Deluxe + State but NOT with TurboTax Deluxe.

H&R Block’s deal with over 40 retailers also covers the Deluxe + State users and they can get an additional 10% bonus on their federal refund if they put a portion or all of their tax refund on e-gift cards from those retailers.  H&R Block Deluxe + State tax filers enjoy all of these features along with the one state product and the 5 Federal e-files for free.
